Três Mares is a two storey villa with pool, gardens and grounds of almost one hectare (more than 2 acres).
The entry driveway is between almonds trees and big shrubberies of red and white flowered oleanders, leading onto a cobbled courtyard, flanked on one side by double garages. The front door is set in a wide porch with tropical plants and a 3-metre tiling from a 17th century monastery in the north of Portugal. Setting the tone for the rest of the house, the Front Hall has sofas and antique armchairs and an impressive round marble table.
There are Six Double Bedrooms, ensuite with full bathrooms, and some with dressing rooms. There are spacious Sitting and Dining Rooms. One smaller room is Library and has TV and a piano. There is a modern Family Kitchen, fully equipped , and with a large breakfast table-area for ten. Off the kitchen in service rooms are a laundry, large refrigerators, a wine cellar, and the maids' shower room.
Despite its size, the layout of the villa works as well for two people as it does for a twelve. Four of the principal bedrooms are in a separate "wing", each with doors onto terraces, and easily closed off from the rest of the house by a single door. On the first floor are two suites, also with ensuite bathrooms, with large private terraces. Around half the ground flour of house are deep covered Terraces, for outdoor living. Privacy and quiet have been priorities but the whole house is excellent for big gatherings. In recent years there have been many occasions for 50-100 people including a number of weddings.
On the hillside at a lower level and entirely separate to the house is a pool complex, high-walled all around for security and safety, with trees and flowerbeds Here there is a bar and independent kitchens and covered seating for 25-30 people, with traditional Portuguese tiling.
The pool can be heated and is a big one, 12 X 6 X 2.5 metres, rectangular for proper swimming but with sets of steps and an inner ledge to help swimmers. Still within the walled area is a full-sized hard badminton court marked out in marble, much used in the summer for all ball games.
There is a large gazebo looking out to sea, which is ideal for an evening drink - and for bird watching. There are two lawns, a small orchard, and half an acre of shade houses filled with plants and trees, a private hobby of the owners. The many specimen plants in the gardens will appeal to horticulturists. The whole property measures close to one hectare and is certainly one of the most exceptional villa-homes in Western Algarve.
